June 14

Do you try to lead a godly life through your own
efforts, and wonder why you so often fail? Can a
broom stand on its own? No, it must be held up,
or lean on something.

So it is with us. We can no more stand on our own than a broom can. It is necessary to surrender to the only One who can keep us upright.

Now to him who is able to keep you from falling and to present you without blemish before the presence of his glory with rejoicing, to the only God, our Savior through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, dominion, and authority, before all time and now and for ever. Amen.
Jude 24-25

By ourselves we are floored, Lord. Thank You that, You are our support and guide.

Sincerity is not guidance. Sincerity may say, “I am sure this plane goes to New York.” You believe this sincerely, but the plane will go to Miami if it is scheduled for Miami, and your sincerity will do nothing to change that!

There is a way which seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death.
Proverbs 14:12

Father, we often sincerely believe we are doing right, even if we are wrong. Give us wisdom through Your Holy Spirit. Guide us so that we do Your will, not ours.

The admission of commitment to God resembles getting on an airplane. Once you are on board, you don’t worry about the directions, for they are the pilot’s job. Your responsibility is to get on the right airplane and, where necessary, to change planes. The pilot must do the guiding and the pilot is the Holy Spirit.

I am the Lord your God, who teaches you to profit, who leads you in the way you should go.
Isaiah 48:17

Father, thank You that the Holy Spirit controls my life, leading me in the path You choose for me to travel.

Direct interference from God is usually for the purpose of adjusting or correcting the way of His children. Much as a space scientist would make an in-flight course correction on a rocket speeding toward the moon, God’s guidance is so natural that the Spirit-led Christian will hardly be aware of it. Often in the eternal counsel of God, it has operated before we made the discovery.

Teach me Your way, O Lord; and lead me on a level path . . .
See Psalms 27:11

Father, show us the way to go with our lives. Direct us, even if we are unaware of Your influence on our decisions.

Much of what we do through our own strength has to be cleansed, but that which we do through the Lord has value for time and eternity.

When Jesus takes your hand, He keeps you close.
When Jesus keeps you close, He leads you through life.
When Jesus leads you through life, He brings you safely home.
—Casper Ten Boom

Preserve me, O God, for in thee I take refuge.
Psalms 16:1

Keep me safe in Your hands, Lord Jesus, guiding me in all I do for Your honor.

As you submit to God’s guidance, you will find that He has taken the incentive in your life, adjusting and rearranging where you have been off the track. You will never find His demands to be greater than that which you can accomplish in His power.

I was not ever thus,
nor prayed that Thou
shouldst lead me on
I loved to choose
and see my path
but now
lead Thou me on
—John H. Newman

Where there is no guidance, a people falls . . .
Proverbs 11:14

Father, forgive my past willfulness and be my guide.

Divine guidance is for all God’s children who ask to be guided. Submit to Him if you should be tempted by your own human desires. Guidance does not come automatically. Receiving guidance is a skill to be learned, not a method. It is intensely personal.

It is these things that we talk about, not using the expressions of the human intellect but those which the Holy Spirit teaches us . . .
1 Corinthians 2:13 Phillips

Lord, teach me how to receive Your guidance. Make me aware of Your gentle direction in my life.
